artist profile: Petra Zieriacks

Searching is an essential part of my artistic practice, one that must accept detours. I search for the ideal formal language for a sculpture, or for an artistic way to represent a theme imposed from the outside. When working with stone, it is also about mastering the hardness of the material or the weight of the stone. I prefer to work with wood using a chainsaw. The weather-related changes that occur afterwards are beyond my control, yet consciously accepted as part of the work’s creation process. The starting point of my work is often found objects—boulders, in the case of stone—that, through their history and the charge they carry, inspire me to make further interventions.
